About Us
Literacy Volunteers of America
is a national nonprofit organization which combats illiteracy through
a network of community volunteer organizations.
Literacy Volunteers - Danbury, Inc. is the second largest of 17 affiliates
in our state. We provide service to the 14 town region, serving 378 learners
in fiscal year 1998-1999. 271 trained volunteers instructed and supported
the students, who are working on reading, writing, and conversational
English skills. 95% of the students are enrolled in English for Speakers
of Other Languages instruction.
Starting in fiscal 1997, LVA-D implemented a new teaching strategy which
enrolled more students than would have been possible with traditional
one-on-one tutoring. These "Talk Time" conversation groups provided
an opportunity for students to learn English once a week in an informal
group (not more than 10 students) setting.
LVA Provides an individualized, student centered approach that is most
effective in serving the hard to reach adult population. LVA prepares
these adults to move on to more formal adult education or job training.
We are committed to the personal growth of our students. This means that
we help people acquire basic literacy skills, and by doing this enable
them to achieve broader personal goals. Literacy is a necessary skill
in itself and the foundation of other life skills.
In our last fiscal year ending June 30, 1999, we served 378 students
for a total of 7,067 hours of instruction. Our 271 volunteers (tutors
and others) donated 10,250 hours of their time to LVA-D and its clients.
Improving adult literacy skills today has a positive impact on the skill
level of the next generation. As the educational level of adults improves,
so does their children's success in school. Investing in the literacy
of adults means "double duty dollars" because it also helps
their children.
LVA-D serves the following towns: Bethel, Brewster, Bridgewater, Brookfield,
Danbury, Kent, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding, Ridgefield,
Roxbury, Sherman, Southbury
