Band Placement Evaluation – Tuesday, June 3rd and Thursday, June 5th  by appointment.

Students meeting these guidelines must take the Band Placement Evaluation:
  • new Symphonic Band members
  • new Jazz Ensemble members
  • new Concert Band members younger than entering grade 7

Band Placement Evaluations will take place at the Danbury Music Centre. During this informal evaluation, which will take no longer than 10 minutes, each student will be asked to play a previously prepared short selection (such as an All-State piece) demonstrating his/her highest level of ability; also scales and sight reading. To schedule an appointment, contact the DMC office.

Jazz Ensemble               9:00am – 10:15am

The Jazz Ensemble will play arrangements from the Big Band era up to contemporary times. Improvisational skills and solo playing will be stressed. The band will use standard big band instrumentation, including trumpets, trombones, saxophones, piano, guitar, bass, and drums. All applicants who have not played in this band before, or those who have not received verbal permission to enroll, must take the Band Placement Evaluation.

Symphonic Band           10:30am – 12:00pm

The Symphonic Band plays advanced level, challenging music. Qualified musicians must be able to play major, minor, and chromatic scales from two to three octaves up and down; must be able to execute different styles of phrasing and articulation; must have knowledge of complex time and key signatures; and must have the ability to play syncopation. Most participants in this group will be in high school and beyond, or will have played at least four to five years. The band will play traditional band literature as well as popular favorites. Students who played in the Summer Enrichment program last year will be notified as to their placement in this group. Students new to the Summer Band program, and wishing to play with this group, must take the Band Placement Evaluation.

Concert Band                12:30pm – 1:45pm

This is an intermediate level band and is recommended for students who have studied their instrument for two to three years or who have the recommendation of their private or school music teacher. This band is also recommended for students who are proficient on a primary instrument and wish to pursue a secondary instrument. Students qualifying for this band must be able to play several two octave scales, up and down; understand compound time signatures; have knowledge of key signatures with at least two flats or sharps; and must be familiar with repeat signs, dynamics, and tempo markings. Most participants in this group will be entering grade 7 or higher. Younger students may qualify by taking the Band Placement Evaluation. This band will play a wide variety of traditional band music.

Preparatory Band           2:00pm – 3:00pm

Musicians in this band will be entering grade 5 or higher and have had at least one school year of instruction on their instrument. Students qualifying for this band should be familiar with basic rhythm patterns, basic time signatures and basic key signatures. They need to be able to play at least a one octave scale up and down. Although most students in this band will be entering grade 5 or 6, the band is also appropriate for older students with little band experience or for those who have just begun to learn a band instrument. Adults who have not played in many years may also find this group appropriate. Elementary level music will be played.
