About Us:

Friends of Old Quarry Nature Center, Inc.

The Friends of Old Quarry Nature Center is an entirely volunteer organization. We are supported by a diverse network of dedicated individuals whose time and talents keep things going and keep improving our service to the community. Our non-salaried Executive Director makes monthly reports on our needs and progress to the Conservation Commission.

While we receive no direct funding from the State, United Way or the City, the City helps us with services, the Conservation Commission has helped us with capital improvements, our facilities were originally constructed by and are now actively maintained by Henry Abbott Technical Schools (HATS), and we are supported by local clubs and foundations. We are run entirely by a small volunteer board.

Statement of Purpose and Mission:

The purpose of the Friends of Old Quarry Nature Center, Inc., as a non-profit organization, is to:

 assist the Conservation Commission of the City of Danbury in their role of management of open spaces by providing sound ecological and recreational objectives and strategies, and

 facilitate the creation and operation of an outdoor learning laboratory for the general public by conducting environmental education programs.

Our mission with the Old Quarry Nature Center is to:

 preserve and protect our eighty acres for passive enjoyment recreation as a "forever-wild" open space, keeping its quarries, groves, wetlands and streams in their original state, as well as providing safe access for the public and educational groups;

 provide healthy hiking opportunities that correspond to the exercise and fitness needs of all types of individuals and organizations for physical and spiritual renewal; and

 supply the community a local environmental science center to be used as an indoor & outdoor lab for public, private and home school programs, along with adult awareness and educational programs.

We welcome your comments and suggestions.
