Welcome to the beginning of the second century of Rotary. Our theme this year, “Service above Self” was chosen by our new RI President, Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammer to represent his commitment to continuity within our organization. Carl explained that the main direction must be the same for many years to come and that he has selected literacy and education; water, health and hunger; and Rotary’s public image as his emphasis.
While at the Rotary International Convention in Chicago, I attended one workshop about increasing membership that did have some new ideas, but one especially struck a chord. A club president from California said that they support the MEL program. We all said, of course, “what’s that”, her response was “Make Everyone Laugh”. I like it, we too have a fun club – let’s have a MEL of a year. Cliff Dochterman, a Past RI President has a three way test – “will it be fun?” “will it hurt anybody?” and “will we get caught”.
