Zone 1 is a small floodplain area that drains to the Still River, as exhibited on
the "Project Details" section of this site. The purpose of this
demonstration project is to purify stormwater pollutants draining off parking lot areas
(conveyed by drainage slough which discharges to the Still River). The photos that
follow illustrate this installation.

Close-up of drainage slough, which is still underwater from recent storms. The slough is
periodically inundated, but generally is dry. It functions as a temporary channel or
"intermittent stream."
On August 28, 1999, a crew of 8 volunteers from Branson
Ultrasonics, US Filter, the Swampfield Land Trust, and others installed the coconut fiber checkdams on this site
A ditch was dug laterally across the drainage slough.
The coconut fiber
"biolog" was placed in 3 ditches that were
placed along the drainage slough.
Completed installation of
biolog. As designed, this installation will provide
a "checkdam" which, during moderate storms, will dam runoff behind the biolog,
allowing pollutants to settle on the floodplain instead of discharging into the River.
On October 2, this installation was completed by planting the biolog with wetland plants (River Bullrushes). The coconut fibers will decompose in 3-5 years
and will be replaced by the spread of the vegetation planted in it.
Behind each biolog, a dense stand of wetland vegetation was planted. This dense cell will function to further slow the discharge of
stormwater and absorb the pollutants into the plants.
In this manner, this drainage slough has been subtlety transformed to provide a passive treatment system for stormwater pollutants.
This project will protect the Still River (shown at point of discharge of the slough) by purifying
stormwater pollutants from the runoff before they reach the River.
