On September 1, 1999, the Shoreline Stabilization Project was installed by an excavation contractor.  The purpose of this demonstration project is to protect the shoreline from further undercutting of the bank and to create shallow pools and hiding zones for fish habitat.  The details of this project design are described on this website, and illustrations can be found as well.

  • The Shoreline Stabilization Project was installed on the south shore of the River, immediately offshore from the Zone 2 floodplain.   The location was changed to the other side of the River due to recent changes in the flow dynamics at this location.

  • A logger removed mature trees that were in danger of falling into the River and kept their root wads intact.  The trees were pruned of their branches prior to installation.

  • After temporarily diverting the water away from the project zone, the bank was shaped to allow the placement of the tree trunks into the shoreline.
  • The contractor anchored the tree trunks into the shoreline, using permanent anchors and cable.

  • Photo shows completed installation, with root wads facing upstream.  These partially submerged roots will immediately provide places for juvenile fish to hide and feed.  Eventually, the dynamics of the River flow bouncing off of the tree trunk will create shallow, quiet pools of water with gravel bottoms that will provide an excellent spawning area.
