The Zone 3 floodplain is
located at the confluence of Limekiln Brook, a major tributary, and the Still River.
The work at this location featured a levee enhancement demonstration, repair of erosion
scours on the floodplain terrace, and installation of a bio-technical check dam in a
drainage slough that conveys storm water to the River.
Work in Zone 3 was completed by a crew of 8
volunteers from Branson Ultrasonics, US Filter, the Swampfield Land Trust, and others who
installed the coconut fiber biologs on September 26. This work was followed by the
work of a landscape contractor who completed the levee installation, installed erosion
fabric, placed the check dam, and planted the levee with plants and shrubs. The
photos that follow illustrate this effort.

and place coconut fiber biologs on the levee.
Volunteers fasten
fiber biolog to levee with duckbill anchors and cable.
Completed installation
of the improved levee. Raising the height of the
levee by 6 inches will cause runoff from parking lots and roads to pool behind the
heightened levee, allowing stormwater pollutants to settle out on the floodplain floor.
The biolog was planted with bullrush plant plugs. The fiber will last several years
before decomposing, allowing the lateral spread of these plants to develop a dense, raised
mat that will replace the biologs and provide the function of the heightened levee.
Close-up of the biolog, showing the plant plugs inserted into the fiber.
Completed installation
of biotechnical checkdam and erosion control fabric on drainage slough. The biolog will pool the runoff and
allow stormwater to pool behind it. Wetland vegetation planted in front of the dam
will absorb pollutants from the discharge through the biolog.
