April/May Session Report

Session has been very busy with varying issues.  To keep you informed, a brief review follows.

  • Scruples 101 was distributed to Session and discussed as it was to be voted on at the May 5th Presbytery Meeting in Rhode Island. (Update: It passed unanimously.)

  • Session elected Commissioners to the May 5th Presbytery meeting-Ann Thomas and Judy Cunningham. (At the meeting, it was learned the ratio of Elders/Ministers has been realigned due to the fact there are fewer ministers so there will be fewer Elder Commissioners.  Valley will now have two instead of three.)

  • Session approved the baptism of Addison Joan Michalek, daughter of Vicki and Brandon Michalek.  It was held on April 22nd.

  • Session also approved for membership Ibia and Chris Vetrano and Kim and Craig Lickiss.  They were publicly received into membership, also on April 22nd.

  • The contract for installing new fuel oil tanks in the boiler room was also approved and they have been installed by B&C.  The old tank outside will either be deactivated or removed.  Action is pending on this item.

  • The new triangular window above the entryway was installed and an estimate has been received for replacing the circular window above the stairway.  Action is pending on the installation of the circular window.

  • Building and Grounds is investigating the cost of installing a new dishwasher in the kitchen.  Final action is scheduled for June meeting if all research done.

  • As per a request from Session, investigation was undertaken on the cost of a new baby grand piano now that Valley has started a piano fund.  Max Vladimiroff agreed to look into the cost for us.  The initial cost for a 7’ Baby Grand Piano is in the neighborhood of $26,000.00.  We do not yet know for sure what a used one would cost but it is being researched.

  • Session also approved, at the Historian’s request, that a new Committee be established to address Preservation issues and policies and will also include Disaster Preparedness of our staff, people and records.

  • As is required, a membership review was held in May with a first reading of possible transfers to the inactive list and removal from the inactive list.  Of note is the fact there were few names to consider for either action.

Finally, any concerns, questions or suggestions should be addressed to Session members or the moderator of Session (our pastor).  Our Session is comprised of the following members: Carolyn Cotter, Judy Cunningham, Cheryl Freeston, Mark Harmata, Jeff Henriques, Helen Parks McGuire, Granville Reed, Addie Sandler, and John Sutor.

Do you need others to pray for you? Do you have a friend or loved one who is in need of intercessory prayer? Valley has a confidential prayer chain that will pray for you, your friends, your loved ones throughout the week. If you want the Prayer Chain to pray for you, call or talk to Ann Thomas or any of the Deacons.

Valley Presbyterian Church—Mission Statement

Valley Presbyterian Church is a faithful community of believers seeking to do God’s will. We are guided by the teachings of Jesus Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

We are an energetic and friendly congregation drawing from many communities.

We value and welcome all and draw strength from our diversity of beliefs, backgrounds, and experiences.

We find great joy in our worship through the sharing of music, word, and sacraments. We are committed to educating and guiding our youth, and offering opportunities for service and growth to all members. We support mission programs locally and throughout the world.

All this we do nurtured in the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Deacon News

The Deacons will continue to help those in need within our congregation as well as those we are connected within our extended community.  Unto that end, we ask you to remember all of those in need both at Valley and within our extended family the first Sunday of each month with the envelope that is in the bulletin.  We have helped families during times of duress, we have helped young people who are using their talents and energy to make a positive mark on this earth, and we want to continue with these requests for assistance.  We thank you for the generous help you provide each month.

It seems our freezer is a bit vacant and among us we have put a plan in place to address this, however, we could use help as well.  If you happen to have an extra serving or two of a favorite meal, feel free to bring it to the church and we will make sure it makes it to the freezer or a family in need.

We would be very grateful if you would take a minute to fill out the questionnaire below and place it in the offering the next Sunday you attend.  The Deacons are making sure that all families are included in a listing that will be shared among the Deacons only.  This will not be published; we simply want to make sure we can reach you in the manner you find most comfortable.

This month through the leadership efforts of Lori and John, our college students will receive a goodie box to get them through finals.  This has been an ongoing project and we hope those we don’t have a chance to see as often will remember the “good” things about Valley!  This year Valley will celebrate college graduations for a number of individuals.  Congratulations to Owen Beams, Brian Aher, Mark Harrison, and Bill Franks.
