FOUND: NEW WEBMASTER
Megan Christian has graciously offered to become
Valley's new Webmaster! A recent 2nd grade teacher, she now spends most of
her time with her young children, Grace and Owen. Look for significant
changes in this website's appearance once she unpacks her computer after her
family's recent move.

VPC Picnic
Come young and old, new to Valley and
those long-timers---it’s time for a picnic at Lake Waramaug picnic grounds near
New Preston, CT !
On Saturday, June 23
from about 10:30 a.m. to about 3:30 p.m.
the Franks and Munns will be
hosting a BYOF(ood) picnic as a way to kick-off summer fun. We’ll secure some
picnic tables, grills, charcoal, bug spray, etc. We’ll also supply paper
products, cutlery, and ice. Please bring your meat, drinks, and something to
share such as appetizers, salads, fruit, or desserts. You might throw in a chair
or blanket for comfort. There usually are canoes and kayaks to rent for about
$10/hr and we will bring our 3-man geriatric kayak for anyone to use, almost
guaranteed not to turn over! There is fishing available (we’ll bring a few extra
poles and worms along with our fishing license so the little ones can fish).
There is a little sandy beach to build sand castles, and shallow swimming if the
water isn’t too cold. Parking was $7/car last year and they had a small snack
bar opened. In New Preston you can browse through the shops. The Hopkins Inn
winery is close by for wine tasting. We also love to drive around the lake and
drool at the homes we wished we owned! I don’t recommend biking as the roads are
narrow but it’s nice to walk around a bit. The Lake is about 45 minutes from
Valley, a left turn off of route 202 at New Preston. The picnic area is on the
opposite side of the lake from New Preston.
We’ll have a sign-up at Church so we can
figure out how many tables to save, but come anyway even if you don’t sign up.
Come for even part of the day too. The picnic will be cancelled if the weather
is really bad or rainy. A few sprinkles won’t deter us though. It’s a beautiful,
relaxing way to spend time enjoying God’s beautiful out of doors. Hope to see
you there.

PRESBYTERY NEWS
There were two major news items from the General Assembly
of the PC(USA), held in late June in Birmingham, Alabama, amidst a very, very
full meeting.
First, the Assembly upheld the 6 recommendations of the
National Task Force on the Peace, Unity, and Purity of the Church. The most
talked about recommendation affirms that the Book of Confessions and the Book of
Order set forth the scriptural and constitutional standards for ordination, and
also affirms that ordaining and installing bodies (Sessions and Presbyteries)
have the responsibility to determine their membership by applying these
standards to those elected to office.”
The second news items was the Assembly’s vote to reframe
previous Assembly’s action on phased divestment with corporations involved in
certain activities in Israel. The instructions are now “to have those financial
investments of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) as they pertain to Israel, Gaza,
East Jerusalem, and the west Bank, be invested only in peaceful pursuits, and
affirm that the customary corporate engagement process of the Committee on
Mission Responsibility Through Investment of our denomination -- in conjunction
with appropriate reinvestment of funds where necessary -- is the proper vehicle
for achieving this goal.”
A full summary, complete with pictures is available in the
narthex. Also, you can talk with Bill and Ann Thomas, as Bill attended the
Assembly in his capacity as the Stated Clerk of our Presbytery.
